Using Unreal Engine 5 to create a virtual previs environment

Dimension Studio operates a few large volumetric capture locations where free-viewpoint video can be shot. This means that over 100 cameras are used to generate a 3D model of whatever is inside the capture volume 25 times per second. When you play back those 3D models, the result looks incredibly natural.

This is the London location of the Dimension Studio. This studio contains two large capture volumes.

These are three capture rigs with different configurations of cameras. Each camera records a movie. Based on this data, an animated 3D model is reconstructed.

This is a screenshot of the virtual capture stage inside Unreal Engine 5. This virtual stage allows Dimension to quickly prototype new configurations and test whether certain movements/materials are captured correctly. Having this information before the shoot day gives new insights and saves valueable time on set.
